New Anatomies by Timberlake Wertenbaker

Cockpit Theatre and Hen and Chickens Theatre, London

 16 February - 4 March 2006

Set at the turn of the 20th century, New Anatomies, by the award winning Timberlake Wertenbaker (Our Country’s Good), documents and explores the true account of Isabelle Eberhartd.  Isabelle lived a fascinating life as an explorer, she was a nineteenth century women who spurned the European community, converted to Islam and spent her adult life traveling North Africa as a man.

The all-female cast negotiates issues that are as relevant today as they were more than a hundred years ago.  New Anatomies follows Isabelle in her search for identity, voice and cultural change in a patriarchal world of restriction, convention and inherent expectation.  Wertenbaker poses the question: should gender, place and identity ever truly be fixed?  Pertinent themes in our current climate of fear and intolerance of the other.

The cast was made up of all ReSister’s female founding members and directed by founding member Antony Law.

ReSister were grateful to receive considerable funding, support and encouragement from a wide variety of public and private funding bodies.  Thank you to Richard Wilson, Awards for All, Westminster Council, The Victoria Hall Foundation and Metak Travel.
